The T-38 Jet Rally offers a chance for many of the nation's finest turbine, electric ducted fan and turboprop RC flyers to fly together in a casual, friendly atmosphere. We restarted the Jet Rally in 2013 after a few years spent securing our flying site with support from the club and local town. It showcases scale jet aircraft as well as many types of "sport jets".
The Abernathy Aerodrome features a big, 1300'+ x 75' hard surface runway with spacious startup area, taxiway and limited covered pit area. The sky is without obstructions or dangers of trees or power lines. As a quality flying site, it doesn't get much better! Please view the video for an overview of the site.
We will officially start flying on the morning of Friday, October 3. The pilot’s meeting will be at 9am and we shut down at dark each day. Last year, many pilots arrived on Thursday evening and logged a few practice flights. Food and drinks will be available on site or nearby in Abernathy. I will be hosting a pilot’s dinner at my house on Saturday night October 4, at no charge, and we'd love to have your significant others along. We will finish up around noon on Sunday October 5 so pilots can get home early. There will be three awards given for Top Gun, Best Scale Flight, and Pilots Choice - It is a very low key event. We want you to relax and fly what you've brought.
John Redman at JetCat is a prime event sponsor this year. He has graciously supplied us with 2 cases of JetCat turbine oil, which we will be giving to pilots upon registration until the supply is exhausted. We really appreciate his help! Also, last year, George DeMoral visited us with the rolling hobby shop of Dreamworks. He was able to squeeze us in between The Bomber Field event in Houston and Best in the West Jet Rally in CA. We've given George another invitation and hope to see him again this year.
Flying weather is typically very good at this time of year. We've picked these days in early October due to mid 70's for highs and high 50's for night time lows with light winds (the least windy month of the year).
We have a $25.00 landing fee, and require AMA membership. Turbine pilots require an AMA Turbine Waiver as well. Come fly with us and have a great time in West Texas.
Hope to see you there!
John S. Johnson, event CD
